The White House has stood on this site since the cornerstone was laid in 1792, and this view looks across its broad South Lawn toward the executive residence, the part of the complex most visitors picture when they hear the name. Lawn views like this one were a favorite subject for photographers because the open grounds show the building's scale and its symmetry, with the central block and flanking wings set off against the sky. Washington itself was still a young capital when the mansion was first occupied in 1800, and it was rebuilt after the British burned it in 1814. Notice how the lawn and the approach frame the house as a place of public ceremony as much as a home.
