The White House is the most photographed building on this board, but this glass negative stands out for its age and origin: it is one of the National Photo Company's plates, made in Washington between 1918 and 1920, a period when the company's photographers documented the capital's monuments and government buildings for sale as postcards and prints. The plate was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the slow decay of the original emulsion, which gives the image a soft, mottled quality that is part of its character. The negative date and the White House's role as the presidential residence both make it useful to anyone studying Washington in the years just after World War I.
