The White House is the most photographed building in the capital, so what sets this view apart is its origin: a glass negative made in the years between 1918 and 1920 by the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the city's streets, monuments and government buildings in large numbers. That was the period just after the First World War, when the executive mansion stood at the center of a capital growing fast with wartime agencies. The plate was donated to the Library of Congress in 1947 by Herbert A. French, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the slow decay of its original coating, which gives the image a faint, weathered character worth noticing.
