The White House has stood on this site since the 1790s, and this 1909 view shows it from street level, with the building's pale façade and its carriage-era setting. In 1909 Theodore Roosevelt's presidency was ending and William Howard Taft was about to take office, so the house was in a period of transition. Street views like this one, taken before the automobile fully reshaped Washington's avenues, offer a plain record of how the President's home looked to ordinary passersby. The building had already been remodeled several times by then, and the mansion's public face was a deliberate statement of national dignity.
