Three men stand among a flock of sheep on the South Lawn of the White House, a scene that would have looked unusual even then. Grazing animals were used on the presidential grounds to keep the grass short, and the practice became best known during the First World War, when labor was scarce and the White House flock drew public attention. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the capital's streets, buildings and official life in the early twentieth century. The record does not name the men, so their roles are unclear, but the scene shows how the executive mansion's grounds once doubled as working pasture.
