Sheep grazing on the south lawn set this view apart from the usual exterior shots of the White House. Before powered mowers were common, grazing animals were a practical way to keep large grounds trimmed, and the executive mansion's lawn had its share of them. The date on the caption card is only approximate, so the scene is best read as a glimpse of everyday upkeep at the White House in the early 1900s. Sheep remained a familiar sight on those grounds for years afterward.
