Sheep grazing on the White House grounds is the unusual feature here, a sight that would have been striking to passersby in the late summer of 1919. The Library of Congress dates the photograph to about August 27, 1919, based on an older caption card, and it was taken by the Harris & Ewing studio, a Washington firm known for its press and portrait work. During the First World War and its aftermath, grazing livestock on the lawn was a practical way to keep the grass trimmed when labor and mowing equipment were in short supply. The picture is a useful glimpse of how wartime economy reached even the President's house.
