Women in Marine Corps uniforms stand on the White House lawn in this c1919 photograph, a striking sight for the period. The nickname "Marinettes" was given to the women who enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve during the First World War, mostly for clerical and other stateside jobs that freed men for overseas duty. The photograph was made by Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded much of the capital's official life for decades. The caption information is unverified, so the exact occasion for the picture is best treated as uncertain.
