The lawn of the White House, with its formal grounds in view, is the unusual setting here: a Wright Type B biplane lifts off in July 1911, with the aviator Harry Atwood at the controls. The Type B was a two-seat biplane from the Wright Company, and by 1911 the aircraft was still new enough that a flight from the President's grounds drew public attention. The caption card notes that Atwood broke a distance record that year, which places the photograph within the early years of American long-distance flight. Harris & Ewing, a Washington studio known for news and portrait photography, made the print.
