Few views of the White House show the grounds working as pasture, but this one places a shepherd and his flock on the lawn before the executive mansion. Before power mowers became routine, grazing sheep were a practical way to keep large lawns closely cut, and the sight drew enough attention that the National Photo Company, which recorded many Washington scenes in the early twentieth century, included it in its collection. The print is dated only to a span between 1909 and 1932, so the exact moment is uncertain, but it shows how the presidential grounds once looked more like a farm than a formal estate.
