Few images capture the White House grounds as informally as this one, which shows a shepherd tending a sheep on the property rather than a formal view of the mansion. Sheep grazed on the White House lawns for many years, keeping the grass cropped in an era before gas-powered mowers, and visitors to Washington often found the animals a surprising sight. The National Photo Company, which produced many street and landmark views for sale to tourists, made pictures like this one in the early twentieth century. The record dates the print to between 1909 and 1932, a span that covers several presidencies and shows how the grounds were used during those years.
