A flock kept on the White House grounds, not the mansion itself, is the subject here. Sheep grazed the lawn to keep the grass trimmed, and their fleece was gathered and sold, a practice that drew public attention around the First World War. The record dates the print to roughly 1920 to 1940, when the executive grounds were still partly maintained by grazing rather than machines. Wool from the flock was sometimes auctioned to raise money for charity, which tied the animals to wartime civic life. The print shows a modest, rural side of the presidency's home.
