The man in this print stands beside a flock on the grounds of the White House, a sight that once belonged to the everyday routine of the president's home. The National Photo Company, which made many street and landmark views of Washington in the early 1900s, recorded such scenes as part of its work for sale to visitors. Grazing sheep on the lawn kept the grass trimmed without mowers, a practice that became especially useful during the labor shortages of World War I, when the flock drew attention for the wool auctioned for war relief. The record gives only a date range, so the exact occasion is unknown, but the picture captures a working detail of the estate that is easy to overlook today.
