Calvin Coolidge stands on the White House lawn in this January 1924 group portrait, flanked by members of the House Agricultural Committee and a delegation of western farmers. The meeting came at a time when farm prices had fallen sharply after the First World War, and agricultural interests were pressing Congress and the White House for relief. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial archive of Washington news and portrait photography that documented the capital's officials and visitors throughout the 1920s. Its informal outdoor setting, with the president among legislators and farmers, offers a record of how the administration met rural constituents.
