Members of the White House police stand on the South Lawn in their newly issued uniforms, drawn up for inspection by their chief, Maj. O.M. Ballinger, on February 17, 1923. The photograph is one of many views the National Photo Company made in Washington that winter, and it shows a small uniformed force at a moment when its appearance was being formalized. Press pictures like this one introduced the public to the people who guarded the president's home, and the open lawn gives a clear view of the lineup.
