Two White House police officers, P.E. Allen and Harry Waters, pose with a group of the executive mansion's dogs in this September 1929 portrait. The photograph was taken during the first year of Herbert Hoover's presidency, and the catalog ties the dogs to Hoover's household, which is why the image is listed among his animals and pets. It comes from the National Photo Company's Washington, D.C., coverage of 1929, when the firm documented the city's official life and its people. Pictures like this show the working staff of the White House as well as the presidency itself, a side of the building that formal portraits rarely capture.
