Three dogs, King Tut, Whoopie, and Englehurst Gillette, sit for this March 1929 photograph at the White House, only weeks after Herbert Hoover took office as president. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio whose photographers recorded everyday life in the capital during the 1920s, and its catalog record ties it to an album credited to Herbert E. French. Pet portraits like this one offered a lighter view of the executive mansion at a time when the public followed the first family's private life with real interest.
