The White House, shown here during its annual inspection and repair, was photographed on March 14, 1929, just weeks before Herbert Hoover took office and the executive mansion was passed to a new administration. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's buildings and public life from the 1910s through the 1930s, and this print sits in a two-volume album of its work from June 1927 to May 1929. Routine upkeep of the residence was a regular concern in that era, and the scene offers a rare candid look at the building between official events.
