The White House gets a literal scrubbing in this view, with workers and scaffolding fixed to the building's facade and portico while its pale sandstone surfaces are cleaned. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's streets, monuments and government life in the early twentieth century, made the picture sometime between 1909 and 1932. Routine upkeep like this was a common subject for the company, which sold views of the capital to visitors and publishers. The photograph is a useful record of how the executive mansion was maintained in an era before modern restoration methods.
