The White House is the subject here, shown with repair work underway at the executive mansion sometime between 1909 and 1932. The print is from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed the city's streets, government buildings, and monuments in the early twentieth century. Maintenance and restoration were constant concerns for a building of its age, and the 1920s brought some of the most extensive structural work on the residence, which had been strained by decades of use. Scenes like this one record the scaffolding and labor behind a building that most Americans knew only from its exterior.
