Rather than the White House itself, this stereograph turns the camera toward the road leading to it, a route that filled with spectators during presidential inaugurations in Washington. Kilburn Brothers of Littleton, New Hampshire, sold cards like this in the late 1880s, and its two nearly identical halves were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused them into a single three-dimensional scene. The card is dated around 1889, the year Benjamin Harrison took office, so it offers a glimpse of street life in the capital during a moment of national ceremony. Look closely at the street scene to see how ordinary city bustle surrounded an event of national importance.
