Few buildings were drawn as often as the White House, but this wood engraving stands out because it was made from a photograph by L.E. Walker, which let the magazine show a real view rather than an artist's impression. It appeared in Harper's Weekly in mid-March 1877, just after Rutherford B. Hayes took the oath of office following a disputed election and as the executive mansion passed from the Grant administration to a new one. Notice how the engraver had to turn the photograph's light and shadow into lines cut by hand into a wood block, a craft that made illustrated newspapers possible before halftone printing became common.
