This view shows an office inside the White House itself, at a time when the president's staff worked in the main residence rather than in a separate building. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer known for her interiors and architectural views, made the picture between 1889 and 1906, though it was printed later. Before the West Wing was built in 1902, the executive business of the government was squeezed into rooms of the old house, so the furnishings and the crowded working arrangement reflect that makeshift era. The print is useful as a record of how the nation's executive offices looked before they were reorganized.
