Few Washington interiors from this period were photographed as carefully as this bedroom inside the White House, a private room of the executive mansion rather than one of its public reception spaces. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading photographer of her day, made the 1893 negative, and this print was made later from it. The picture records the furnishings of the 1890s, including the upholstery, bedding, and decorative objects that reflected Victorian taste. Because the record notes that the original negative may be available, researchers can compare this print with the source image.
