Private rooms of the executive mansion were seldom recorded by camera in the 1890s, which makes this bedroom view unusual. It comes from interior studies by Frances Benjamin Johnston, a leading Washington photographer of the period. Dated about 1893 but printed later from its negative, it shows the late Victorian furnishings and textiles that filled family living quarters, and its date places it near the start of Grover Cleveland's second term.
