Frances Benjamin Johnston made this view of the east passage of the White House sometime between 1889 and 1906, a period when the executive mansion's interiors were furnished in the taste of the late nineteenth century. Johnston, one of the most accomplished photographers of her era, documented the building's rooms and hallways, and her pictures show the furnishings, wall treatments and everyday spaces that staff and visitors passed through. The print is worth a close look for its furniture and for the way the long corridor draws the eye forward, giving a view of a working residence rather than a formal state room.
