This view centers on the east portico of the White House and the iron gates and fence that separated the grounds from the street, a side of the mansion that visitors approached on foot and by carriage. The photograph dates to about 1903, when Theodore Roosevelt was in office and the executive mansion had recently been remodeled under the 1902 renovation, which moved the president's offices out of the residence. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American cities and landmarks to tourists, issued the print, so it reflects how the building was presented to the public at the turn of the century.
