This view shows the south side of the White House, the portico and flanking wings that face the lawn and the Ellipse rather than Pennsylvania Avenue, which the title's street address might suggest. The South Portico was added in the 1820s, after the house was rebuilt following its burning in 1814, and it became the executive mansion's main face for visitors arriving from the grounds. The print is a photomechanical reproduction of an engraving by H. C. Merrill, and it comes from the Mrs. H.S. Owen Collection, which holds many 19th- and early 20th-century views of Washington buildings.
