A still garden pool in the foreground draws the eye toward the south side of the White House in this view, with the columned South Portico rising behind it. The portico was added in 1824, giving the mansion a more formal face toward its grounds. Theodor Horydczak, a Washington photographer who spent decades recording the city's buildings, made the picture around 1933, early in Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency. It offers a quiet record of how the executive grounds looked in the Depression years.
