This view shows a flower garden and pool on the White House grounds in Washington, D.C., a space the public rarely saw up close in the years between 1910 and 1940. The grounds had been reworked in the early 1900s, when the architecture firm McKim, Mead & White redesigned the surroundings and gardens took on a more formal, ornamental character. Photographs like this one, often made for sale as souvenir views, record how the executive residence presented itself to visitors during that period. The copyright notation on the record suggests the image was registered as a published work, which was common for commercial views of notable buildings.
