The West Colonial Garden sits on the western grounds of the White House, a formal space laid out in a colonial revival style that set it apart from the more naturalistic lawns elsewhere on the estate. Photographed around 1917, the picture captures the grounds during the years when the executive mansion was undergoing practical changes to its landscape and public face. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. Its gardens offer a quieter view of the presidential residence than the building's familiar facade, showing how the grounds were used and tended in the early twentieth century.
