The front elevation shows the White House straight on, with no perspective, so every window, cornice, and column can be measured against the next. It dates to 1828, when the mansion was still being restored after British troops set fire to it in 1814 during the War of 1812. James Hoban, the Irish-born architect who had designed the house in the 1790s, oversaw much of that rebuilding. Drawings like this one record the building as it was being put back together, and they remain a useful guide to how the exterior was meant to look.
