Taken from the north, this view shows the front of the executive mansion that faces Lafayette Square and the north portico, the approach most visitors of the day would have used. The house had been rebuilt after British troops burned it in 1814, and its pale sandstone, whitewashed over the years, helped give it the name the public used long before it became official. Around 1901 the building stood on the edge of major change, as the Roosevelt administration soon began a large reconstruction and expansion. Photographs like this one record the house as it looked just before those alterations.
