This engraving shows the President's House from its north front, the side with the portico that greets arrivals from Pennsylvania Avenue. It was published in Morrison's *Strangers' Guide to Washington* in 1842, a guidebook that helped visitors recognize the city's main buildings. The north portico had been added in the late 1820s, and images like this one gave travelers a familiar picture of the executive mansion before they reached it.
