The north portico of the White House is the entrance most visitors picture when they think of the building, with its porte cochere and covered carriage drive facing the front gate on Pennsylvania Avenue's side of the grounds. In this view, a group of men stands before the portico, though the record does not identify them or say when the photograph was taken. The portico itself was added in 1829 during Andrew Jackson's presidency, so the scene dates from the later nineteenth or early twentieth century or after. Group portraits in front of the mansion were a common way to record official visits and visiting parties.
