Unlike the many views of the White House's south face, this photograph shows the North Portico, the entrance on the side facing Lafayette Square. It was probably taken between 1859 and 1861, just before the Civil War, and it belongs to a album of public buildings assembled by Montgomery C. Meigs, the Army engineer who oversaw federal construction projects in Washington at the time. The record is based on an old caption card and has not been fully verified, but the image still shows the executive mansion as it looked in the years before the war changed the city.
