The north portico of the White House, with its broad columns and central steps, is the element that sets this view apart from the many images of the building's south front and grounds. Porticoes of this kind were a familiar feature of the Executive Mansion by 1921, when the nation's capital was still settling into the postwar years under President Warren G. Harding. The portico's classical columns, modeled on the Neoclassical style of the early republic, have framed presidential arrivals and ceremonies for more than a century. Look closely at the proportions and the play of shadow under the roof, which show how the architects of the 1790s aimed for dignity and symmetry.
