The north portico of the White House, shown here from the east, is the side of the mansion most visitors know from the north lawn and Pennsylvania Avenue, though this angle gives a different sense of its bulk and the curve of its colonnade. The photograph dates to about 1923 and was submitted for copyright on December 20 of that year, which places it during the Harding administration, a few months before Calvin Coolidge assumed the presidency after Harding's death in August 1923. Its copyright deposit is a useful record of how the executive residence was documented in the early 1920s, when the building was still widely photographed as a civic monument.
