Its title sets the joke in motion: a hard road to hoe, with the White House Turnpike paved, or macadamized, by the "north benders" named in the caption. Dated 1840, the print belongs to the presidential campaign between Whig candidate William Henry Harrison and incumbent Martin Van Buren, and it treats the road to the White House as a figure for the contest itself. The subjects it names also include Andrew Jackson, the Capitol, and the Independent Treasury, the banking measure Van Buren backed. That mix shows how the cartoon linked the election to the fight over federal finances and to Jackson's political legacy.
