The record identifies this as a model of a proposed enlargement of the White House's north front, the side that holds the main entrance and North Portico. Its date is not recorded, but the halftone print reproduces a three-dimensional study, a format architects and planners used to show how an addition would change the building's massing and its relationship to the grounds. Proposals to expand the Executive Mansion recurred as presidents needed more office and staff space, and the north side, already the public face of the house, was a frequent focus of such debates.
