The South Front, the side of the White House that faces the Ellipse, is the view most people know from the lawn, with its curved portico added in 1824. This photograph shows a model that imagines the building larger than it was, reflecting the recurring debate over whether the executive mansion could keep pace with the work of the presidency. Such proposals were drawn up repeatedly from the late 19th century onward, as staff, offices, and visitors multiplied. The record does not include a date, but the model is worth studying for what it reveals about how architects and officials pictured the home of the president.
