The south front of the White House, with its broad lawn and formal gardens, is the side most visitors picture when they think of the presidential residence, and this National Photo Company view captures it in the years between 1909 and 1932. The National Photo Company operated in Washington during the early twentieth century, producing large numbers of commercial views of federal buildings and monuments for tourists and postcard makers. Its images give a useful record of how the grounds looked before later renovations and the 1948 rebuilding of the interior, and the gardens and lawn in pictures like this one show the carefully kept landscape that the public could see from the surrounding streets.
