The east front of the White House is the side most visitors saw first in the 1920s, since the East Wing entrance and the Pennsylvania Avenue approach were the usual points of arrival for official callers and tourists. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that produced large numbers of commercial views of federal buildings and city scenes in the early twentieth century, made this print sometime in the 1920s, when the building was still the principal residence and office of the president and had not yet undergone the major structural rebuilding of the following decade. The title's question mark reflects the cataloguers' uncertainty about the exact vantage point, so the view is worth studying for its angle and the surrounding grounds.
