The east facade of the White House, shown here in a photograph made by the National Photo Company sometime between about 1920 and 1930, faces the grounds that lead toward the Treasury and the Ellipse. That side of the executive mansion is the more formal of its two public fronts, with the portico and carriage drive designed for arriving guests. The National Photo Company was a Washington firm that documented government buildings and street scenes in the early twentieth century, and its prints are valued today for recording the capital between the two world wars.
