Few views of the White House show its east side as plainly as this one, which faces the street and the grounds that visitors and officials passed through daily. The image dates to about September 1919, when Woodrow Wilson was in the second year of his presidency and the country was adjusting to the end of World War I. By then the building's east side handled much of its ordinary traffic, and the 1902 expansion had already given the executive offices more room. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress collections.
