Among the many White House views on this board, this glass negative stands out for its focus on the building's east entrance, the side many visitors approached rather than the more familiar north facade. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio, made pictures like this for sale to tourists and collectors in the early twentieth century, and the plate's date falls within the years it was active there. The negative shows some streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which is typical of glass plates of this age. Its survival through the Herbert A. French gift in 1947 is what lets us see the building's daily entrance as it looked then.
