The East Room is the largest formal reception space in the White House, and this view looks across one of its corners, where the room's plain, high-ceilinged proportions and gilded fittings are most visible. The East Room has served as the setting for state funerals, wedding receptions, press conferences and concerts since the mansion was first occupied in 1800. Its decor has changed many times over the decades, and a corner view like this one shows how the space balanced ceremony with the everyday business of the executive residence.
