The East Room is the largest room in the White House, and this view looks at one corner of it rather than the whole space, which is how Detroit Publishing Company photographers often framed interiors around 1904. The room was used for receptions, state dinners, and ceremonies, and by then it had already been furnished in the style of the early twentieth century, with its gilded and formal décor. Detroit Publishing Company produced large numbers of such views for sale to tourists, so the picture doubles as a record of how a national landmark was presented to the public at that time.
