The East Room of the White House is the largest formal room in the executive mansion, and this c1904 view shows it as it looked in the early years of the twentieth century, when it served as the setting for receptions, state dinners, and public ceremonies. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American landmarks and interiors for sale as souvenirs and travel views. Its caption card lists the room under miscellaneous interiors, a reminder that these images were made to document a place many Americans would never visit in person.
