The East Room is the largest room in the White House, and this view shows it in the years after the Civil War, when it remained the main space for state receptions and public gatherings. Its most solemn use came in April 1865, when the body of Abraham Lincoln lay there in state, and the room went on hosting formal occasions during Andrew Johnson's presidency. The picture was made from a glass negative around 1867, and this print was produced from that negative in 1992. The room's orderly, ceremonial arrangement is worth noticing, since it reflects how the space was meant to be used.
